Hey there!

It's Sunday, which means that it's time for an email packed with some great content, just for you.

What I've made for you

Book notes:I just finished Poor Charlie's Almanack. It contains the 'wit and wisdom' of Charlie Munger. It was an absolute joy to read. Not only was it often entertaining, but I learned a great deal as well.I took a lot of notes this time — just over 8.5 thousand words, in fact. I hope you enjoy my notes as much as I did making them.Poor Charlie's Almanack - Charlie Munger.

Study Routine

It's the start of a new semester. I've made a habit of revising and improving upon my routine for studying each semester.

Once I have tested it a bit more, I will most likely write about the thought process and methodology behind it.

This is my current model.

Studying Session Outline

  1. Review

    1. Anki review.

    2. Review the days lecture (after the lecture).

  2. New Material

    1. SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) Readings. Use active recall here during recitation. Only look at the textbook if you really can't remember. Don't write down while reading. Then you're just copying over.

    2. Do exercises until you can do them without notes. Expansively; explain! Make sure you understand, not simply recognize.

    3. If material is not sufficient; research. Make sure that you can explain the concepts to anyone. Understanding the concepts is key; not memorizing them.

    4. Add questions to Anki & Review.

  3. Assignments

    1. Do assignments. Do them well.

    2. Explain feedback you receive to yourself. Make sure you understand why.

Stage System

Coverage

Requirement: None.

Stage Description: Pre-lecture. First introduction to ideas. Lecture.

Action: Do homework & take notes. Take notes during lecture.

Post Stage: Move from coverage to practice quickly. Don't rush the stages, but don't wait too long between.

Practice

Requirement: Having covered the ideas and having sufficient notes.

Stage Description: Practicing the covered ideas.

Action: Implement the ideas. Do flashcards. Reiterate complex ideas in own words.

Post Stage: Move to insight to understand better.

Insight

Requirement: Have the ideas covered.

Stage Description: Understanding complex ideas.

Action: Use Feynman or Walkthrough technique. Metaphors, visualization, mnemonics are all good too.

Post Stage: Move on from this stage only if you can reason up to and through the ideas completely by yourself. It's about understanding, not recognizing. If you cannot explain the idea to someone who does not know it, then repeat this stage.

Maintenance

Requirement: Have completed all of the previous stages.

Stage Description: Maintenance of ideas. Remembering, deepening understanding, and exploring them.

Action: Flashcards & implementation of ideas.
