Sunday Goodies: Sep 26, 2021 — Mental Models & Leverage
Hey there.I hope you've had a great week.
Theory of Constraints
There are a very small number of resources (men, machines, or materials), that dictate the output of the entire system. It is critical to create an optimized and trusted flow of work to the constraint, otherwise it will be underutilized, thereby limiting the output of the entire system.
Improving only the bottleneck matters, because the whole will always wait for it anyway.
The constraint is the bottleneck.
Personal leverage
Personal leverage is how you decouple your outcomes from your inputs.
You have a limited amount of resources, but you desire outputs that are much more than linear to those inputs — you want exponential outputs.
How to acquire mental models
Find the underlying principles of what you learn. Build mental models.
Organize key ideas into a mental model. See how those mental models connect. Be aware of the cogs in the machine, but see them as parts of a whole (or parts of a part of a whole…).
Then you won't get overwhelmed by the abundance of information, and you can freely sort and filter what you need.
Like the expert's piercing gaze, where the beginner sees more than is manageable. It is to distinguish the forest from the trees and the trees from the forest.
