Plato's Republic, PodNotes, and quality great works
Hey there.
I hope you've had a great week.
What I've made for you
Website Redesign—Home | Christian B. B. HoumannRecently I have taken to rebuild and redesign my website, so I can do more in less time. I'm still in the process of building it, but so far I'm very happy to share my progress.
Book Notes—The Republic by PlatoGreat read. It is interesting to try to follow the arguments presented by the various characters, then seeing whether you agree, disagree, or otherwise have an opinion yourself. Participate in the dialogue.
PodNotes—the easiest way to write notes on podcasts. The plugin is rapidly advancing, and we're getting closer and closer to a full release.Since last mentioning it, the following has been added:
Playlists, queue, and favorites
Autoplaying next in queue
Seeking
Support for custom feeds (e.g. paid feeds)
Latest episode view
And tons of assorted fixes.
If you don't know, this is a plugin for Obsidian that can play podcasts and makes it easy for you to write notes on them.Interested? Read more here—it's free.
A great find for readers
In a previous edition I noted that I would start focusing on reading classic works.I've been slowly chugging along on this project, and have managed to read quite a few on my list.
However, there is a big problem with reading old books: the quality sucks on modern devices.
After fiddling with reading horribly formatted ebooks for too long, I finally discovered a solution: Standard Ebooks. They share absolute top quality ebooks of old books. Here are some books I'll read from there:
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, by Benjamin Franklin
Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Friedrich Nietzsche. Translated by Thomas Commons
The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellows
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. Translated by Chapman and Halls
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglasss
War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy. Translated by Louise Maude and Aylmer Maudes
Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy. Translated by Constance Garnetts
The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Translated by Constance Garnetts
Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Translated by Constance Garnetts
Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Translated by John Ormsbys
Quote
An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.
